Project no. 136

Status In progress

Start Sept 2022

Challenge

With the significant increase in renewable generation, there is a need to optimise transmission capacity. In this context, it is sought to monitor in real time the available capacity on the overhead lines and to estimate the operational capacity for the next day.

Goals

This project seeks to optimise transmission capacity on the overhead lines by following two alternative approaches:

  • Indirect method (software based), which consists in creating a digital-twin of the network and in numerical prediction models;
  • Direct method (hardware based), which consists in installing physical sensors on very-high-voltage lines to determine their operating conditions, while allowing the indirect model to be assessed.

Benefits

  • Maximise transmission capacity based on favourable environmental conditions, including interconnection capacity
  • Avoid market changes and halt renewable generation
